At a staggering 19,400 feet, Mig La Pass (also called Migla Pass) in Ladakh’s Leh district has become the highest motorable mountain pass in the world, surpassing the current record-holder, Umling La Pass (19,024 feet). Located near Hanle on the 64-km-long Likaru-Mig La-Fukche road, this high-altitude pass is close to the Indo-China border, making it a strategically significant route.
While Khardung La (17,582 feet) once held the title of the world’s highest motorable pass, it was later surpassed by Marsimik La (18,314 feet) and then Umling La (19,024 feet). Umling La holds the Guinness Book of World Record of being the highest motorable pass in the world. With Border Roads Organisation (BRO) unfurling flag at Mig La on October 01, 2025, this high altitude pass has taken the crown, offering thrill-seekers and adventure enthusiasts a new extreme destination in the Himalayas. Fukche is just 3km from LAC.
BRO has completed construction of the road to Mig La on October 1 which is expected to be open for tourists in summer season of 2026.

⛔ Tourist Access & Ministry Clearance
Government of India is opening its frontline border areas for tourists. Siachen Base Camp, Umling La, Demchok are a few of them. Since Migla pass lies near the Indo-China border, it is located in a sensitive military zone. Tourist access will only be permitted after a formal nod from the Ministry of Defence. Until then, only defense and authorized personnel are allowed on this route.
✅ Once open, tourists will likely require special permits just like other restricted areas in Ladakh such as Hanle, Umling La, and Demchok. Mig La is expected to open for tourists in summer tourist season of 2026.
How to Visit Migla Pass?
The Mig La pass is accessible from Likaru near Hanle. However, tourists may not be allowed until the Ministry of Defense gives its nod. As Fukche is very sensitive region with advanced landing ground near LaC, tourists may not be allowed to go beyond Mig La.
“The World’s Highest Motorable Road at Likaru-Migla-Fukche will set new records in the world. This strategic road will not only empower the forces but also improve the quality of life for the people living in these border areas. There will be immense improvement in the social and economic condition of the people who have been living in these villages close to the borders”: The Director General Border Roads Organisation Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhary.
Challenges of Visiting Mig La Pass
⚠ Extreme Altitude Sickness Risk – Oxygen levels drop drastically; acclimatization is a must.
⚠ Harsh Weather – Freezing temperatures, strong winds, and sudden snowfall.
⚠ Limited Medical Facilities – The area has limited medical facilities. So, medically unfit people may avoid travel until the Army/BRO establishes required infrastructure similar to Umling La.
⚠ Road Conditions – BRO is still developing the road; expect rough and unpredictable terrain until blacktopped.
Best Time to Visit Mig La Pass
The pass remains snowbound for most of the year, but the best time to attempt the journey is:
-
Mid May to September (Summer months when roads are relatively clearer).
- Winter (Oct-April) – The road is mostly closed due to heavy snow and ice.
Nearby Attractions
-
Hanle Observatory & Village – One of the world’s highest astronomical centers.
-
Umling La Pass – Current highest motorable pass (19,024 ft).
-
Tso Moriri Lake – A stunning high-altitude lake in Changthang.
-
Fukche Village – One of India’s last villages near the China border.
