Manali-Leh highway reopens after five months 23 April 2024: The Manali-Leh national highway (NH-3), which was closed for traffic movement since November 20, 2023 following winter snowfall, has been thrown open for military vehicles as Border Roads Organisation (BRO) completed its snow clearance operations on Tuesday (April 23, 2024). As many stretches of the road are still slippery and narrow, only Indian Army vehicles will be allowed first. As condition improves, the civil administrations of Ladakh and Himachal will take decision to allow civilian vehicles including tourists. The process may take upto a week. However, in case of poor weather conditions and more snowfall, the road can be closed for safety reasons. The Leh-Srinagar highway is already open. The Manali-Darcha-Padum-Nimmu-Leh road was recently opened. Now the Leh-Manali road is also open. The snow clearance could be possible ahead of time due to two reasons -- tireless efforts by BRO teams from Himachal and Ladakh sides and comparatively less winter snowfall. - Manali Leh Highway (NH3) is a 428 km long strategic highway connecting Ladakh to the rest of India via Manali. The highway is strategic for the movement of the armed forces and their supplies and wares to forward areas in Ladakh region that borders both China and Pakistan, as well as connecting the people of Ladakh to India. The highway is an alternate axis to the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway. This road is also popular among tourists. With onset of winters and snow accumulation the highway remains closed from November end till it is opened by the BRO's Work Force. Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti administration has requested people to avoid traveling on this route. Water sources along the highway have frozen completely. A layer of frost is covering the road at Rohtang, Baralacha, Sarchu, Keling Sarai, Taglang-la, Pang and other high altitude areas. Frost remains round the clock in shady areas, increasing possibility of skidding of the vehicles. Apart from icing, the temperature is such that mountains can experience snowfall any time. Taking precautionary measures, the highway is officially declared closed every year on November 15. Though vehicular movement continues at own risk between Manali and Lahaul as this highway is the only lifeline to the residents but people traveling would be responsible for any accident. However, the traffic movement between Keylong (Lahaul) and Leh is almost nil. The main risk after October 15 remains of sudden snowfall which may trap vehicles at secluded areas away from any help. Police posts from Sarchu, too, have been removed until next season. In the past, too many such incidences have put people in trouble because weather between Rohtang and Taglang-la is unpredictable which changes within a few minutes. Manali-Rohtang-Keylong-Leh highway is blocked beyond Kothi, 14km from Manali. Rohtang pass, Baralacha pass and other high passes have received heavy to very heavy snowfall in last few days. A thick layer of frost has covered the highway, making driving very risky. Given the safety of public, the highway has been officially closed. Border Roads Organization (BRO), which is responsible for the maintenance of this road, has informed that the snow from highway will now be cleared after March only. A bridge on Manali-Leh highway at Koksar, 70km from Manali, has also been removed to stop flow of vehicular traffic. Hundreds of residents of Lahaul valley have migrated to Kullu-Manali and other lower areas. Almost all the residents of Koksar, Dimpuk and Ramthang villages on Lahaul, on other side of Rohtang, have migrated to Kullu district. Koksar has nearly 26 families, both Dimpuk and Ramthang villages have 10 families each. These villages are wearing deserted look. Temperature on Rohtang, Baralacha and other high altitude areas along the highway is dipping as low as minus 30 or even below. Srinagar-Leh highway has also blocked on Zojila pass beyond Sonmarg. This highway will open in April. BRO officials have informed that snow clearance operation on Manali-Leh highway will start on March 1 and the highway is expected to thrown open for vehicles in end of May. Heavy snowfall set to delay opening of Manali-Leh highway If you are planning to visit Ladakh by daunting Manali-Leh highway, it's better to make necessary changes in your itinerary. According to confirmed reports, heavy snowfall and several avalanches along the Manali-Leh highway will delay opening of the highway for vehicular traffic. The road is expected to open on or after the first week of June 2015. Both Rohtang pass and Baralacha pass are deep under 30 to 50 feet of snow.
