Precautions and Tips for Leh Ladakh Tour with High Altitude Passes
A trip to Leh Ladakh is one of the most thrilling travel experiences in India, offering breathtaking landscapes, serene monasteries, and adventurous high-altitude roads. However, since most parts of Ladakh — including its famous mountain passes like Khardung La, Chang La, Tanglang La, Umling La, and Mig La — are located above 17,000 feet, travelers must take necessary precautions to ensure safety and comfort.
Here are the essential precautions and tips for Leh Ladakh travel — especially while crossing high-altitude passes:
🧭 1. Acclimatize Properly
-
Spend at least 48 hours in Leh before visiting higher-altitude areas than Leh.
-
Avoid overexertion on the first two days — take it slow and let your body adapt to reduced oxygen levels.
-
Drink plenty of water (3–4 liters daily) and avoid alcohol or smoking during the initial days.
💊 2. Prevent High Altitude Sickness (AMS)
-
Symptoms: Headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and fatigue.
-
Medication: Consult your doctor about Diamox (Acetazolamide) — take it before arrival in Leh if recommended and continue taking it for 1-2 days.
-
Natural Remedies: Garlic soup, ginger tea, and staying hydrated help manage mild symptoms.
-
In Severe Cases: Descend to a lower altitude immediately and seek medical help.
🚙 3. Be Prepared for Long, Tough Drives
-
Mountain passes are often remote, with limited facilities. Carry snacks, energy bars, dry fruits, and enough water.
-
Ensure your vehicle is well-maintained, with extra fuel, tire pressure checked, and emergency tools ready.
-
Keep anti-skid chains during winters when roads are icy.
🧥 4. Dress in Layers
-
Temperatures can fluctuate rapidly — it can be warm in Leh but freezing cold at high passes.
-
Carry thermal inners, fleece jackets, windproof outer layers, gloves, woolen caps, and warm socks.
-
Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential — the sun’s UV rays are stronger at high altitudes.
📱 5. Stay Connected — Smartly
-
Only postpaid mobile networks work in Ladakh. Jio, Airtel and BSNL have the widest coverage.
-
Many high passes and isolated areas have no network at all, so inform family about your itinerary in advance.
💳 6. Carry Cash
-
ATMs are available in Leh town but may often run out of cash.
-
Most remote regions like Pangong, Tso Moriri, and Nubra do not accept digital payments, so carry adequate cash for fuel, food, and accommodation.
🍽️ 7. Eat Light and Healthy
-
Avoid overeating at high altitudes — your digestion slows down.
-
Prefer soups, porridge, light curries, and hot drinks instead of heavy fried food.
-
Avoid alcohol and smoking as they dehydrate the body and worsen AMS.
🏨 8. Choose Reliable Accommodation
-
Always opt for heated hotels, guesthouses, or homestays in winter.
-
Pre-book accommodation through reputed local tour operators like Discover Leh Ladakh to avoid last-minute issues.
-
In remote regions, electricity and hot water may be limited — be prepared for basic amenities.
🧘 9. Take Care of Your Health
-
Avoid sudden physical activity or running at high altitudes.
-
Keep basic medicines for headache, stomach upset, fever, motion sickness, and cold.
-
Carry oxygen cylinder if you’re traveling to very high passes or have breathing issues.
🚫 10. Respect Local Culture and Environment
-
Leh Ladakh is home to Buddhist monasteries and eco-sensitive zones. Dress modestly and maintain silence inside monasteries.
-
Avoid littering — carry your trash back to Leh or use designated bins.
-
Refrain from disturbing wildlife or plucking plants.
📸 11. Photography at High Passes
-
High-altitude passes like Mig La and Khardung La offer stunning photo opportunities.
-
Don’t spend more than 10–15 minutes at the top, as oxygen levels are extremely low.
-
Keep your camera battery warm in your pocket — cold weather drains it faster.
🧳 12. Travel Essentials Checklist
✅ Valid Photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID or Driving License)
✅ Inner Line Permit (ILP)
✅ Warm clothing, gloves, socks, and cap
✅ Sunscreen (SPF 50+), lip balm, sunglasses
✅ Water bottles

❄️ 13. Be Ready for Weather Delays
-
Sudden snow or rain can block mountain passes like Khardung La, or Mig La.
-
Keep a buffer day or two in your travel itinerary to avoid missing flights or connections if travelling in winter.
-
Always check the road status from the Border Roads Organization (BRO) or your travel agency before departure.
🕉️ 14. Travel with Responsible Local Operators
-
Choose experienced and government-registered travel agencies who understand Ladakh’s terrain and climate.
-
Local drivers are well-trained for mountain roads and can guide you safely through narrow passes and icy stretches.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TOURISTS VISITING LADAKH
Ladakh is a very safe, welcoming, and tourist-friendly destination. The locals are warm and cheerful, and visitors generally feel at ease. However, a few preparations can make your trip even smoother, more comfortable, and truly memorable:
-
Mobile Connectivity: Only post-paid mobile connections work in Leh–Ladakh, with BSNL, Airtel, and Jio being the most reliable. Network coverage is limited in many areas, so inform your family in advance not to worry if they are unable to contact you.
-
Cellular Network Availability: BSNL offers the widest coverage, though it can still be patchy. Airtel and Jio signals are available in major areas, but don’t expect widespread connectivity. Jio is spreading its network in most places.
-
Internet Access: High-speed internet is rare in many parts of Ladakh. Connections are usually slow and sometimes unavailable, especially in remote areas. Jio has the best internet.
-
Clothing: Even in summer, temperatures in Ladakh can dip to around 5°C at night or early morning. Always carry a pair of warm woolens (not too heavy) to stay comfortable. In winter (late October to April), wear heavy woollens in layers.
-
Sun Protection: The sun in Ladakh is intense due to the high altitude. Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap to protect yourself from sunburn and direct rays.
-
Valid Photo ID: Keep a government-issued photo ID handy. Driving License, Passport, Voter ID, or Aadhaar Card are all valid and may be required at checkpoints.
-
Health Precautions: While traveling through mountains, stay hydrated and eat light, healthy meals to avoid altitude sickness and dizziness caused by low air pressure, curvy roads, and dry air.
-
Basic Medicines: Carry essential medicines for headache, stomach upset, and nausea etc. Tablets to prevent vomiting are also recommended.
-
Altitude Medication: Some travelers take Diamox to help with acclimatization. It is usually taken two times a day, starting from 02 days before arrival in Leh, and continue to take for next 02 days in Leh. This is optional—adequate rest and plenty of water after arrival can also help your body adjust naturally.
-
Cash & ATMs: Leh has a few ATMs, but they often face long queues, connectivity issues, or run out of cash during peak tourist season. Carrying sufficient cash is strongly recommended.
-
Respect Local Culture: Ladakh is home to both Buddhist and Muslim communities, who live in harmony and treat tourists with warmth and respect. Visitors are expected to be equally respectful towards local traditions, customs, and religious sites.
