Although the demarcation and official set up may take some time, the Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X (formerly Twitter) that government has decided to create five new districts in Ladakh. The new districts will be Nubra, Zanskar, Sham, Drass and Changthang. The announcement has sent waves of happiness across Ladakh. With altitude ranging from 2,550 m to 7,742 m, the Union Territory of Ladakh has a geographical area of about 59,146 square kilometers but it has only two districts Leh and Kargil. Soon, Ladakh will have seven districts with Leh being the administrative centre of UT of Ladakh. The main reason behind only two districts in Ladakh was its low population which is about 2,74,289 as per 2011 census. The geographical difficulties, with many villages being as far as over 200km from district headquarters, or taking a full day travel or more to reach district headquarter for important works, were one of the reasons behind not all people easily taking advantage of government schemes and other facilities. The Deputy Commissioner of Leh, Santosh Sukhadeve chaired a meeting to discuss the conduct of the Chadar Trek 2024. The meeting addressed concerns about the safety of tourists undertaking the trek, considering the current conditions of the Chadar route. During the session, Deputy Superintendent of Police, UT Disaster Response Force (UTDRF), Sonam Dorje, provided a detailed briefing on the present situation of the Chadar route. He highlighted that the ice formation on the trail is not stable, raising potential safety issues for those planning to embark on the Chadar Trek. Expressing genuine concern for the safety of tourists and the overall enthusiasm surrounding the Chadar Trek, DC Leh, Santosh Sukhadeve directed the UTDRF to collaborate with the All Ladakh Tour Operators Association (ALTOA) Leh to conduct a thorough review of the situation on January 11 or 12, with a primary focus on ensuring the safety of the Chadar Trek participants. In the event that the situation is deemed critical, Deputy Commissioner Sukhadeve made it clear that he would prohibit tourists from undertaking the Chadar Trek until conditions improve. The aurora came to lower-than-usual latitudes overnight leading to rare sightings from Europe, China & Ladakh in India. During the ongoing Parliament session, MP Jamyang raised demands for the construction of three major roads to connect Ladakh with the mainstream countryside in Himachal's Lahaul-Spiti district and J&K's Kishtwar for greater interest. He said there are three possibilities for building a shorter road from Kishtwar district of Jammu division to the Zanskar valley of Ladakh which are the construction of 45 km Paddar-Padum Road, Kishtwar-Atholi-Maichil- Soomchan-Zongkhul or 80 km Kishtwar-Atholi-Maichil-Dangail-Potla-Bardan’. This will be the shortest route between Northern Command and Pathankot Airforce/Military station to Ladakh as it will reduce the distance by about 150 km. This route being the shortest was also followed by the legendary Dogra General Zorawar Singh during his conquests of Ladakh and eastern Tibet in the 1830s. Construction of Udaipur-Padum Road from Miyar Valley of Himachal's Lahaul via Khanjar- Zardong-Kesar-Kang La-Padum or Khanjar-Shangkha-Thangso-Kargyak near Shinkunla Zanskar will also reduce the distance.
