Shinku-La Tunnel or Shinkula Tunnel or Shingo-La Tunnel or Shinkun La is upcoming motorable tunnel under 16,580ft high Shinku-la pass between Himachal’s Lahaul valley and Ladakh’s Zanskar valley in Northern India. The tunnel was given principal approval in 2021 but the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (February 15, 2023) gave a final nod to the project. After budget allocation and floating tenders, the work to dig the tunnel started in July 2024. Ministry of Defence through Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is building Darcha-Shinkula-Padum-Nimu as an alternative road to connect Ladakh with Himachal Pradesh. This will be the third highway connecting Ladakh with mainland after Srinagar-Kargil-Leh and Manali-Sarchu-Leh highways. The Manali-Padum-Nimu road or Darcha-Padum-Nimu road will become all-weather after the completion of the Shinku-la tunnel. This will be the safest and shortest road to reach Leh. As Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, has bypassed 13,050ft high Rohtang pass, Shinkula pass will be the only pass on this new road. It was in 2007 when I first visited Puga valley (then Puga hot water springs) with my friend during winter time for wildlife photography. Nobody from Ladakh or tourists had any interest in Puga hot water springs as the entire area was and still is boggy. Puga was not so famous until recently when a girl (tourist) shot and posted a reel of the area with lush green valley and brown mountains in the backdrop. The video went viral. People started asking for this place and many others reached here for photography and reels. Many found the area attractive while others not. Puga is very far away from Leh (nearly 170 KM). Generally tourists pass through Puga when travelling from Tso Moriri to Leh or Manali via Tsokar route. Now it has become a famous destination for tourists. However, Puga being at high altitude cold region, the small waterlogged ground besides the road looks green only in summer time from June to early September. Then it turns brown with drying up of the grass. Puga is known for its natural hot water springs where hot water is oozing out of the earth. The scientists are studying the region for many years and are trying to generate geothermal energy. They have drilled the land at many places from where hot water is coming out with a great force. Border Roads Organisation connects Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road March 25, 2024: After Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has provided Leh Ladakh with third option to connect landlocked Leh Ladakh with outer world with its newly connected road -- the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha (NPD) road. The BRO achieved breakthrough in this road today. The NPD road connects Nimmu, 30km from Leh on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar highway with Himachal's Darcha, 100km from Manali on the Manali-Leh national highway.
