Stok Monastery, also known as Stok Gompa, is a serene Buddhist monastery located about 15 km from Leh, Ladakh. History of Stok Monastery Stok Monastery (gompa) was founded in the 14th century by Lama Lhawang Lotus, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa school. Since then, it has remained an active place of worship and a hub for religious teachings. The monastery also has a close association with the Ladakhi royal family, as Stok Palace, their current residence, lies just a short distance away. Monks from Stok Monastery regularly participate in royal and community ceremonies. Stok Palace is about 2km from the monastery which was built in 1820.
